| Abraham Lincoln December 9, 1998 - 11th Grade -------------------------- Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth president, was a person of integrity. He had many moral traits that helped him become a good president. Some examples of his courage would be his opposition for the Dred Scott decision which concerned slavery of African Americans. Once he became president, he made the Emancipation Proclamation. This was Lincolnšs declaration of freedom for all slaves in the areas of the Confederacy not under Union control. Lincoln had to have a lot of courage to put this out, because if it didnšt work, it might of cost him his presidency. Lincoln was a very honest man, which earned him the nickname ŗHonest Abe˛. Lincoln learned what ordinary citizens felt about their government. He was the peoplešs president, straightforward, and sympathetic. Lincoln has always been responsible. Since he was a young child to when he was president. When he was young, he would always do his chores when told and would always be looking for work to help people. When Lincoln was president he had responsibilities ranging from organizing military strategies to finding capable general officers. Lincoln took full accountability for everything that he did. He was careful to keep complete control of the emancipation proclamation. He made sure that nobody but himself would be blamed but himself if it didnšt work. Lincoln was very open-minded and seeked feedback from all directions. Like when he was deeply concerned about the terms under which the Southern states, once subdued, should be restored to the Union. He had no fixed plan for reconstruction. He would have welcomed a simple decision on the part of any Southern state government. |
