Dream September 13, 1999 - 12th Grade -------------------------- I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave this speech he was telling about something that he felt deeply about. A dream is defined as a condition or achievement that is longed for; an aspiration. Another way to describe the word is by a series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. A third way to describe dream would be to invent or concoct, as in dreaming up something. When someone thinks of the word dream, they will most likely think of it in the first two manners more often. Each definition of dream is specific in itıs own way however. The first way to define dream is used to describe an aspiration. It is describing something that someone holds very dear to them. Nobody can take your dreams away from you. People set aside personal goals that they feel they need to accomplish. If you donıt have any dreams in your heart, then you canıt really set a direction or a way to live your life. An example in my life is that I dream to have a successful career in computers, be with a woman that I love, and to pass my ideals and life onto our children. The second way to define dream is by having a dream when you are asleep. This is when your brain works overtime when your body is at rest. Dreams are pieced together from what you have experienced in real life, but they are also based on your imagination. Everyone has their own unique dreams. This description can also tie into the first way of having an aspiration. You could dream about your dreams basically. Meaning that if you wanted to talk to a certain boy or girl, you could dream about this in your sleep. When a person dreams they go into a state which is called R.E.M. sleep, which stands for Rapid Eye Movement. When a person falls into this deep sleep it is hard for them to wake up easily. The only way that you can be able to remember what you dreamed about is if you wake up during your dream. Otherwise you will not remember it. For me, I usually remember the dream a little later in the day. My dreams are usually tied into what is going on in my life, but more often they are very confusing and usually disturbing and hard to comprehend. The third definition is to dream up something or to conceive or invent something. This can be just like a dream that you have in your sleep but rather you are not asleep. For example, an artist thinks of a good idea for a painting or drawing. He has conceived something in his mind and will put forth his ideas. I have my own web site on the internet and I am constantly thinking of new and different designs for it and new ways to share my ideas. Aspiration, dreaming in your sleep, and conceiving an idea are all ways to define the word dream. Having all these different ways of dreaming gives a person hope for the future, thinking the unthinkable, and being innovative.
